2017 OSHG: PEOPLE: How many avatars can we get into a meeting?

How many avatars can we get into a meeting?
A consideration of why we may want to have large numbers of avatars in a single place.   A consideration of likely use-cases suggested some workable alternatives for most use cases.  Suggested arrangements are offered for the rare cases that have no alternative.
  • That is the wrong question to start with.
  • In my consulting days, I would have responded, "What is your objective?"
  • The answer will probably be "I want to have a lot of people at a virtual meeting."
  • Why?  What do you want to happen at that meeting?
  • What can you do with a lot of people but have them witness a presentation?

    Witness a presentation

    • Live-stream it and put it on YouTube.  People can witness in a browser.
    • Even better, you can record a live-stream and have it available any time.
    • You might be able to get a lot of observers into a world if they don't have avatars.
    • You can do that in a web-world.  I don't know the audience capacity for that.
    • We will have to test that question.

    Have a conversation

    • You are not going to have a conversation among even twenty people.
    • You may have several competing conversations.
    • If you want useful conversations, form groups of twelve or less.
    • In education, these might be groups led by an instructor.
    • In other contexts, these might be language groups.
    • For productive conversations, these should be interest groups.
    • But interest groups specifically related to the objectives of the meeting.

    Present a participatory theatrical event

Participatory theatre is a form of theatre in which the audience interacts with the performers or the presenters. Participatory theatre is often used with very young audiences, allowing babies and toddlers to join in with the action.Despite a long history and traditions of audience participation within genres such as music hall and pantomime, fully participatory theatre is still sometimes viewed as avant-garde. In a typical participatory production, performers may socialise with audience members before the show while seating them, then surprise these spectators by inviting them to the stage
    • This case probably gives the strongest reason for
    • wanting a large number of avatars in one place.
    • Here are suggestions I have taken from Ilan Tochner, CEO of Kitely, and others.
    • Everyone is seated.
    • No one is wearing scripted items (except, as needed, the performers
    • All objects are phantom, except those that must be non-phantom
    • (Note that scripted seats can be phantom.)
    • Avatars should not arrive via Hypergrid; they should  have local grid registration.
    • Avoid anything that is constantly running or changing (e.g.,flexies)
    • The limit has not been established.  Possible rule of thumb: 80 avatars.
